The organizer of EOU used to be the commissioner of Economy Development Committee of Africa (UN/ECA, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). In 1999, with the prompt of the international distance education conference, two affiliate organizations were founded: League of International Universities and the Distance University Consortium. Both of these two organizations are subject to the EOU. EOU is the first university of the intercultural information assistance project of the United nations.
